You have 5 seconds to choose: Which would you rather live without—your toes, your eyes, or your heart?
That’s a no-brainer question, right? You can totally survive without a few toes. You can learn to live blind. But you absolutely can’t survive without your heart.
That’s why the Roman soldier’s #1 concern was to make sure his core was covered. He couldn’t afford for his heart to be damaged—or any other of his vital organs, either! 😛
To protect his core, the Roman soldier used a breastplate. And in Ephesians 6, the Bible tells us that believers should wear a breastplate, too—the breastplate of righteousness.
So we know that righteousness is super important. And if you’re teaching the armor of God to kids, you must be sure to teach your kids about righteousness!
But what is righteousness, anyway?!
“Righteousness” is such a big word. And it’s not a concept we talk about very much.
Very simply put, “righteousness” = being right with God.
If you have righteousness, you are right in God’s eyes. If you have righteousness, you’re have a right relationship with God. What’s more, anyone who doesn’t have righteousness will experience God’s punishment (Romans 1:18).
Righteousness is crucial!
In fact, righteousness is the #1 thing that you must have to be saved from eternal punishment. If you want to share eternity with God, in a right relationship with Him, then you must have righteousness.
And if you’re teaching the armor of God, this is the one point you must share with your kids! I’m sure you want them to spend eternity with God. You want them to be made right in His eyes. You want them to experience salvation & a right relationship with Him.
And so you must teach them the crucial importance of having righteousness. But not just any righteousness. God says that our righteousness—our efforts to fix our relationship with Him—are like filthy rags in His sight (Isaiah 64:6). There’s only one type of “righteousness” that is acceptable in God’s eyes—the righteousness that is offered to us through Jesus Christ (Romans 3:21-26).
This is the righteousness that your kids desperately need. So when you teach the Armor of God, teach them about their need for righteousness. Teach them about the perfect righteousness that they can have through Jesus Christ. And then challenge them to take that righteousness themselves—to be made right with God—by putting their trust in Jesus alone.
That, my friend, is the most important thing you can possibly tell your kids. That is the #1 thing you must teach your kids about the breastplate of righteousness—that it’s something they must have, and that they can obtain it as a free gift through faith in Jesus Christ alone.
