What is REAL obedience? Jesus said if we love Him, we’ll obey Him. Are we actually obeying God, or not? Scroll down to read more!
“If you love Me, keep My commands.”
How many times have you skimmed over this verse (John 14:15)?
How many times do you think you’ve nodded your head in agreement?
Sure. Lots of times. Me too!
But how many times have you stopped to think that maybe you aren’t actually doing what it says?
“Wanting to” doesn’t equal obedience
Not too long ago, I would have argued that I was an obedient follower of God.
At least, I try to be. That’s good enough, right?
It’s true; my attitude IS important. There’s no denying that God is very interested in the condition of my heart.
But my obedience is also important.
“Other service” doesn’t equal obedience
It’s also important for me to obey in everything—not just the ways that I want to.
That’s what we expect from our kids, isn’t it?
Imagine you ask a child to clean his room. He gives you a hug and says, “Sure, Mom!” And he really means to do it.
But then instead of cleaning his room, he decides to wash the dishes instead.
Now I imagine you’d be pretty thrilled to have your dishes washed! 😉 But would you be completely happy with that child? Would you give him a pat on the back and say, “Wow, you did such a good job obeying me!”
Not so much.
Incomplete obedience equals disobedience
Or imagine if you ask your child to clean his room, and he goes in and hides the dirty laundry behind the closet door, kicks the toys under the bed, and sweeps the dust under the rug.
Is that obedience either?
I don’t think so! In fact I imagine you’d be kind of upset with that child!
Incomplete obedience is disobedience. You can find that all throughout the book of Judges.
I bet you can see the parallel I’m drawing here. 😉 If we’re honest, we “obey” our Heavenly Father in the same sort of ways.
We say we love Him. But we don’t actually OBEY.
I think we all, kids and adults, can benefit from learning a little more about real obedience!
