Want to study the Word of God for yourself—but don’t know where to begin? Scroll down for 1 super simple tip for where to start reading the Bible!
You don’t know where to start.
Most women don’t do personal Bible study because they simply don’t know where to start.
It’s true! “I don’t know where to start” = the most common reason women don’t read the Bible!
Is this you? If it is, I totally understand. The Bible is a huge book!
Perhaps you once started reading in Genesis—only to get bogged down in the details of Leviticus. Or maybe you’ve flipped through looking for encouragement as a mom, and landed on sections filled with battles, blood, & gore instead. Or maybe you just feel in over your head when you come across terms like “justification” and “propitiation.”
To be honest, it’s perfectly legitimate to feel like you just don’t know where to start. But that doesn’t mean it should be an excuse for us to avoid the Bible altogether.
This is God’s Word—His message to us, preserved in written format. We don’t want to just ignore it. In fact, we can’t afford to skip over it.
We need to know where to start reading the Bible.
When we know where to start reading the Bible, it becomes super valuable to us—a crucial source of encouragement, comfort, & strength. It gives us new insight into the incredible character of our God, and draws us into deeper & closer relationship with Him. It gives us wisdom and knowledge about life. It shows us how to think & what to do when we desperately need guidance.
You may already be totally convinced about all that. And you want to start studying the Bible for yourself.
So today we’re going to demolish that defeated feeling. You can quit saying in despair, “I don’t know where to start reading the Bible!” Instead, you can know, with confidence, where you should start your Bible reading.
Here’s my #1 tip for where to start reading the Bible!
Start reading the Bible in the book of John. It gives the story of Jesus’ life. So it’s easy to read—kind of like a fictional novel. But the book of John is no fiction book! It’s 100% true and historical. The things recorded in John actually happened. It is a true account of the life of Jesus.
And John was written for a very specific purpose. John 20:31 says:
…these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. (NKJV)
The book of John was written so that you would know who God really is. And knowing & believing who He is results in good & joyous things for us.
So instead of looking at that huge, fat book and feeling overwhelmed by it, you can come to Scripture with a plan in mind. Sit down. Turn to the first chapter of John. And dig in with the confidence that you do know where to start! ❤️
Plus, this is just the beginning. In my next post in this “Obstacles to Bible Reading” series, I also give you a simple, actionable tip for how to dig into the book of John.
